Faith Like A Child
By Dane
In Matthew 18:3 Jesus says, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you change and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.”
I don’t know about you guys but I’ve often thought about this verse and pondered what it truly means and how it should apply to my life. I believe to go before God as a child is to go before God stripped of our sins and doubts, full of wide-eyed inspiration that comes from total and complete submission.
Throughout our adoption journey God has used our children to illustrate this to us first hand. Several years ago Ansley out of the blue walked up to Robin and said, “Mom, do you know that some kids don’t have parents?" Then matter of factually said, "We should help them.” This came unprompted out of no where, but was just the encouragement we needed to keep moving forward.
When you are matched or request to see a waiting child's records, you have access to their adoption "file." This includes any information that the agency has about the child. A few weeks ago when we first requested to see our little girl's file, we explained to Graham that we wanted to review her files and consult with a few medical professionals before making up our minds. Graham looked at me & Robin and said, “Let’s get her! We can be the help she needs, we can take care of her.” We were blown away and knew that Graham was right!
You see our children saw things differently than me and Robin did. They viewed things through the eyes of a child, like whats described in Matthew. They didn’t let the world tell them that there could be challenges, or that there could be difficulties. They simply saw a little girl that needed a family to take a chance on her.
Webster’s dictionary describes “childlike” as “becoming a child; meek; submissive; dutiful.” God seeks a childlike submissiveness and meekness, a joyful childlike heart and a childlike faith.
Faith builds character, and the process starts when you are a childlike.
When we first laid eyes on her, we both new that she was our daughter, but we wanted peace of mind that we thought a doctor could give us. We were looking to the world for reassurance when we should have looked to God. God used Graham and Ansley to remind us that when we were experiencing fear and doubt, HE was there for us.
Here our children are showing that their lives are effected by adoption. Look at their faces? Do you see fear or faith of a child.
